Ocean of Space: the ocean and its routes

Everything the ocean’s page says outside its questions, claim by claim. A route’s description stands on the questions it links.

If something here is wrong, misquoted or unfair, write to support@unknownoceans.com and give the claim number, which does not change.

Voyager 2 observations near the heliopauseintroduction, first paragraph

    Cited · Link answered, 19 October 2026 · Read in full, 24 September 2026 · Astronomical observation · Measurement

The source reads: crossed the heliopause (HP) on Nov. 5 2018 when it was 119 AU from the Sun ... V1 crossed the HP in August 2012 at 121.7 AU

What this does not establish

The heliopause is one of the solar system’s edges, the one set by the Sun’s wind. The first stop’s own point is that there are others, and that the one set by the Sun’s gravity lies far beyond it.

Later work looked for

Relies on the solar-edge register’s search (Crossref, 2020 on, "Voyager heliopause interstellar plasma density"), which found nothing that changes the two crossing distances.

Corrected

24 September 2026. Previously: “Start at the edge of the solar system and keep going until the question stops being about distance.” The route’s first stop says there is no single edge: the planets stop at about 30 Earth-Sun distances, the Sun’s wind at about 120, and its gravity, by NASA’s placing of the Oort cloud, somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000. The second stop is a planet proposed at several hundred, which is beyond the wind’s edge and well inside the gravity’s, so “the edge” then “keep going” only held for one of the three. The new line names that one.

A judgement, not a fact. Reviewed for whether it is fairly put and follows from the checked claims. No source can confirm it.

Each stop lies further out than the last: past the heliopause at about 120 Earth-Sun distances, a planet proposed at several hundred, which may not exist; then planets around other stars and the search for life on them; then the edge of what can be observed; then whether space goes on without end.

The last stop asks whether space is infinite. Its page says flatness is measured and is consistent with both an infinite and a very large finite universe, and that the difference is not one light from beyond the horizon can carry: the question becomes one of geometry and of what can be known, not of how far away something is.

The stops run from the first minutes, through the dark stretch before the first stars, to what a star leaves when it dies, to gold made when two of those remnants merge, to today’s disagreement over how fast space is expanding, and on to how it ends. Star death and the mergers go on throughout cosmic history; the order is the order in which each first becomes possible.

Corrected

24 September 2026. Previously: “The universe in order, from the first three minutes to whatever the last ones are.” Two things. The route put gold before star death, but its gold stop is the 2017 merger of two neutron stars, which are what the star-death stop says a massive star leaves behind; the two stops now run in that order. And “whatever the last ones are” took for granted that the universe has last minutes. Its last stop says that if dark energy is a constant the universe thins and cools forever, and the constant is the description that has fitted since 1998; only some of the alternatives end in finite time.

The source reads: Predictions of the abundances of the light elements, D,3He, 4He, and7Li, synthesized at the end of thefirst three minutes, are in good overall agreement with the primordial abundances inferred from observational data

What this does not establish

Three minutes is when the light-element yields are essentially fixed, not a hard stop: the first stop’s page says reactions go on at a trickle for about twenty.

The source reads: or expand forever, becoming increasingly cold and empty ... before the death of the Universe in a “Big Rip”

What this does not establish

With a constant, expansion goes on without end and there are no last minutes to reach, only a universe running down. A rip would end in finite time, and a weakening dark energy could turn expansion to contraction; which, if any, holds turns on whether dark energy changes, which the last stop reports as a weak and disputed preference in current data.
